Lakeland History Center Celebrates Family History Month

Staff Report / lakelandlocal.org

October is recognized as Family History Month, and the Lakeland History and Culture Center (LHCC) is highlighting its collection of school yearbooks as a valuable resource for genealogical research. The archives contain yearbooks from local elementary schools and colleges, offering insights into the activities and lives of past students.

These yearbooks not only include photographs but also detail extracurricular involvement such as sports, music, and drama. They reflect changing trends and cultural fads over the decades, prominently displaying hairstyles and clothing styles of the time. Local businesses have historically advertised in these yearbooks, providing a glimpse into the community and sometimes featuring current students.

The LHCC has digitized many yearbooks from Lakeland schools, making them accessible online. Monthly viewing statistics indicate significant interest, with Kathleen High School, Lakeland High School, Santa Fe High School, and Rochelle High School being the most viewed this year out of thirty-five schools in the collection.

Additionally, individuals with yearbooks that they no longer wish to keep are encouraged to consider donating them to local libraries for inclusion in this valuable historical resource.
